The Private Label Renaissance: How Retailers Are Redefining Value and Loyalty

Private label products have undergone a significant transformation, evolving from basic, low-cost alternatives to sophisticated offerings that compete directly with national brands. This shift is reshaping consumer perceptions and retail strategies alike.

A Surge in Private Label Sales

In 2024, private label products reached a record $271 billion in sales, marking a 3.9% increase from the previous year. This growth outpaced national brands, which saw only a 1% rise in dollar sales. Over the past four years, store brand dollar sales have increased by over $51 billion, a 23.6% gain.

Evolving Consumer Perceptions

The perception of private labels has improved markedly. A significant number of consumers now view store brands as equal to or better than national brands in terms of quality and value. This change is evident across various demographics, including higher-income households.

Retailers Embrace Innovation

Retailers are responding by expanding and enhancing their private label offerings. For instance, Walmart’s “Bettergoods” line focuses on health-conscious consumers, while Target’s “Dealworthy” brand offers affordable non-food items. Costco’s Kirkland Signature continues to be a standout, now representing about one-third of U.S. food sales.

The Competitive Landscape

Major consumer goods companies like Nestlé, Unilever, and Reckitt are easing price hikes in the U.S. to retain cost-conscious shoppers amid rising competition from lower-priced store brands and weakening consumer confidence. Private label goods, still cheaper by at least $1 on average, have been outpacing major brands in growth.

Final Thoughts

The evolution of private label products reflects a broader shift in consumer behavior and retail strategy. As shoppers seek quality and value, and retailers aim to differentiate themselves in a competitive market, private labels are poised to play an increasingly central role in the retail landscape.
