More than 200,000 customers shop at Walmart stores or on Walmart.com each week, buying more than 150,000 different grocery products. Walmart is putting all the data this generates to work, using it to improve its services. One key way that Walmart uses data to predict behavior and improve its responses is in choosing substitutions for online grocery orders. When a customer has ordered a specific product that is out of stock, the decision of which item to substitute is not left to the Walmart associate picking the order. Instead, artificial intelligence makes the call based on learning algorithms. According to Walmart, this has improved customer acceptance rates from 90% to around 98%.
As Walmart’s grocery delivery services have continued to boom, posing competition to companies like Amazon and Instacart, the tech that Walmart uses has expanded too.
