After more than forty years working across Procter & Gamble, Walmart, CROSSMARK, and the broader retail ecosystem, I have learned to pay close attention when the industry stops talking about what might work and starts aligning around what must work.
That shift was unmistakable at NRF 2026.
The conversations on the show floor, the maturity of the technologies on display, and the consistency of themes across retailers, suppliers, and solution providers all pointed to the same conclusion: retail is entering a period where execution matters more than experimentation, and where visibility and action are inseparable.
This is not about chasing the next shiny object. It is about building an operating model that consistently delivers product availability, reduces waste, supports store teams, and meets the expectations of a customer who is firmly in control.
Four themes from NRF 2026 stand out as essential for retail and CPG leaders preparing for the year ahead.
RFID is no longer a future-facing innovation or a category-specific test. It has become foundational infrastructure for retailers serious about inventory accuracy and execution.

The most effective AI applications focus on translating data into clear, prioritized actions. They help teams understand what to do first, where to deploy limited labor, and which issues pose the greatest risk to sales or customer trust.
At NRF 2026, the strongest AI use cases were not abstract models or futuristic promises. They were systems designed to support real decisions, in real time, in real stores.
Technology conversations can sometimes obscure the most important reality in retail: the customer decides who wins.
Today’s consumer is informed, empowered, and unwilling to tolerate friction. Multiple studies, including those from NielsenIQ and Bain, show that when shoppers encounter out-of-stocks or inconsistent execution, many will substitute or leave the retailer entirely. Loyalty is fragile and must be earned repeatedly.

What ties these themes together is visibility, not visibility for its own sake, but shared, trusted insight that aligns retailers and suppliers around the same facts.

Retailers and CPGs that succeed in the year ahead will be those that treat visibility as a strategic asset, invest in integrated platforms rather than disconnected tools, and design their operations around execution rather than aspiration.
NRF 2026 did not signal a future built on hype. It confirmed that the tools to operate retail better already exist.
The challenge now is not innovation. It is execution.
