Not Just a Robot—A Teammate: How Badger Technologies Is Reframing Retail Automation

A Shift in Perspective: From Replacement to Reinforcement

There’s no shortage of technology in retail—only a shortage of time to make use of it. That’s the gap Badger Technologies is closing with its new Digital Teammate platform, featured recently in The Robot Report. Rather than layering on another tool or dashboard, Badger has created a flexible system designed to work alongside store teams, not apart from them.

The Digital Teammate combines Badger’s autonomous mobile robot with advanced computer vision, RFID capabilities, and a mobile-friendly data platform—bringing shelf-level visibility, prioritized tasking, and store-wide intelligence into one unified experience. It’s a shift away from thinking of automation as a replacement for labor, and toward something more collaborative.

As CEO Emil Martinez puts it, “It’s not any different than a typewriter. This can help ensure more human interactions.”

Retail Operations, Reimagined

Since its founding in 2002, Badger has been focused on automating critical—but often tedious—store functions: hazard detection, inventory tracking, planogram compliance, pricing accuracy. With the Digital Teammate, that functionality is being expanded and reimagined.

Store associates can now access real-time alerts and task lists through a mobile app, while managers and executives gain visibility across locations. The platform doesn’t just surface exceptions—it helps teams act on them, and learn from them.

RFID Takes Center Stage

That’s where the platform’s new RFID integration comes in. Instead of scanning items one at a time, the Digital Teammate can now scan stacks of RFID-tagged merchandise in seconds. When expiration dates are included in those tags, the robot can identify expired or aging products before they cause waste, reduce freshness, or threaten compliance.

Supporting the Shopper Experience

It’s not just about inventory, either. With an interactive tablet onboard, the Digital Teammate can also serve as a wayfinding assistant, brand ambassador, and even a retail media display—offering personalized help to shoppers while generating new monetization opportunities for the store.

Younger consumers, in particular, are responding well. A recent survey cited by Badger shows that 63% of Gen Z and millennial shoppers had positive interactions with in-store robots. Efficiency and novelty, it turns out, are a winning combination.

Intelligence Without the Complexity

Still, for Martinez and his team, this launch is about more than a new generation of robots. It’s about rethinking the role automation should play in brick-and-mortar retail.

Rather than asking store teams to become analysts, Badger is building systems that do the analysis for them—and deliver it in the language of action. From identifying stockouts and pricing errors to helping retailers monitor execution across banners and banners, the Digital Teammate gives operations teams a head start each day.

Built to Adapt, Ready to Scale

The platform’s flexibility has even opened the door to branded customizations. Some retailers have wrapped the robot in store-specific skins, while others are using aisle-based screen content for targeted promotions. As Martinez describes it, “We see ourselves as a Swiss Army Knife rather than a one-size-fits-all solution.”

Badger’s footprint speaks for itself: more than 1,000 robots deployed across the U.S., logging over 30 million miles in live store environments. And with the official launch of the Digital Teammate this summer, the company is doubling down on its vision for automation that complements human work, instead of complicating it.

Final Thoughts

The Digital Teammate isn’t just a new tool—it’s a new model. One that blends the best of what technology can offer with a grounded understanding of what store teams need most: support, simplicity, and more time to focus on what matters.
