Description

Matt Fifer is a former Walmart corporate leader who spent nearly 13 years guiding teams across store and club operations, people development, corporate marketing, and international mergers and acquisitions.

During his time with Walmart, Matt helped introduce several foundational programs and technologies, including the company’s earliest self-checkout systems and its first computer-based learning platform for associates. Later, within Walmart’s Marketing organization, he worked under CMOs Paul Higham and Bob Connolly, supporting the company’s executive leadership team on communications, brand development, and the launch of hundreds of new products and services in partnership with merchants, suppliers, and agencies.

In 2003, Matt joined Walmart’s international M&A team, leading the Tokyo-based rebranding of Seiyu. The initiative modernized the 40-year-old retailer’s merchandising and pricing strategy and introduced an Every Day Low Price model consistent with Walmart’s global principles.

After leaving Walmart in 2005, Matt founded and grew several companies based in Bentonville, Arkansas, all focused on helping retailers and suppliers strengthen collaboration, accelerate innovation, and grow together.

Through his two platforms — ConversationsOnRetail.com and WinningWithWalmart.com — Matt connects industry leaders, innovators, and practitioners through courses, interviews, and partnerships designed to advance operational excellence across the retail ecosystem.

A lifelong student of retail, Matt now travels the country full-time, studying and celebrating innovation in the field. Whether visiting stores, touring technology labs, or sitting down with founders and retail executives, he uncovers stories and insights that reveal where the industry is headed.

His work today centers on the convergence of automation, data, and digital media — and how these forces are redefining the relationship between retailers, brands, and shoppers.

At his core, Matt is a builder. He thrives on working alongside passionate teams to bring new ideas to life, strengthen partnerships, and drive meaningful progress throughout the retail industry.
