Unveiled at Amazon’s “Delivering the Future” event in Dortmund, Germany, Vulcan represents a new era in warehouse automation. Unlike its predecessors that relied purely on visual cues, Vulcan integrates tactile sensors and AI to “feel” its environment—providing precise, human-like control when handling objects.
Equipped with two highly specialized arms—one with a force-sensitive gripper and the other a suction device guided by AI vision—Vulcan is engineered to navigate Amazon’s densely packed, fabric-covered storage pods. This dual-arm configuration gives it the versatility and finesse to pick and stow a wide range of items, including those nestled at odd angles or in tight spaces.
Vulcan has already processed more than half a million items across fulfillment centers in Spokane, Washington, and Hamburg, Germany—early evidence of its promise in live operations. Its reach into top and bottom bins helps reduce physical strain on employees, eliminating the need for repetitive climbing, bending, or awkward reaching.
Importantly, Vulcan isn’t designed to replace human labor—it’s designed to work in tandem with it. When the robot encounters an item it can’t handle, it signals for human assistance. This collaborative model underscores Amazon’s broader vision for a human-robot workforce, where each does what they do best.
While Vulcan marks a standout moment in robotics, it’s also part of a sweeping trend transforming retail logistics and store operations.
2025 is shaping up to be the breakout year for humanoid robots. Companies like Agility Robotics, Boston Dynamics, and Figure are moving from prototype to production with machines that can walk, lift, and interact in warehouse and factory settings.
