Amazon’s Smart Glasses Push the Boundaries of Last-Mile Innovation

A New View for Delivery Drivers

Amazon has begun testing a new tool that could reshape how its delivery drivers work. The company’s AI-powered smart glasses combine computer vision, real-time data, and augmented displays to guide drivers through every step of a delivery.

The goal is simple: make the process faster, safer, and less dependent on handheld devices. Drivers can scan packages, follow walking directions, and confirm deliveries using only their line of sight. For a company managing millions of deliveries each day, even small time savings add up.

According to Amazon, the glasses are designed to reduce the need for drivers to switch focus between their phone, the package, and their surroundings. The result is a more seamless and less distracting experience on the job.

How the Glasses Work

When a driver parks at a delivery location, the glasses automatically activate. They help the driver locate the right package inside the vehicle and then display walking directions to the exact delivery point, whether that’s a home, apartment, or business suite.

The system pairs with a controller worn in the driver’s vest, which contains manual controls, a swappable battery, and an emergency button. The glasses also support prescription and transitional lenses for comfort during long shifts.

In future versions, Amazon plans to add features such as real-time defect detection to flag potential delivery errors and sensors that recognize pets, low light, and other environmental hazards.

The company is currently trialing the glasses with a limited number of drivers in North America and will refine the technology before any broader rollout.
